After a complete chance encounter on the randomly generated international webcam site, Chatroulette, Bouchard and Coppola, the front-couple of Match by Match, began a long distance friendship-turned romance that lead to the “single most productive thing to ever come out of Chatroulette.” Hinging on the juxtaposition between Coppola’s classical training and Bouchard’s punk DIY background, Match by Match is a collision of musical references and styles, bending genres and meshing influence as they set out to make music they wouldn’t trust anyone else to make.

Though their critically acclaimed concept album, American Crowbar (2011), become an instant "Michigan classic”, even inspiring the production of "The American Crowbar Case (2011)," a staged musical adaptation of the record by The New Theatre Project (Ypsilanti, MI), they were anxious to move on to a wholly new creative project. The two retreated to their Ypsilanti basement with amps and microphones, ready to overhaul any preconceived notions of what the next record would sound like.

Their quest for sonic rebirth began by trading in their signature acoustic guitar and accordion, opting for dirty Fender tones and screaming organs. With the advent of Coppola’s “key kit”, a one-man band type instrument of her own creation, she is able to carry the duties of an entire rhythm section by herself. The recent EP VIVAT VERITAS (2013) represents a year-long journey of musical growth for the band; from writing and reworking the tightly arranged songs to fine-tuning their undeniably powerful live performance, “the album represents a definite shift towards the power pop for Match by Match.” (Damn Arbor) Driven by synth momentum, dirty garage-rock guitar and larger-than-life choruses, the band creates a lush, unique soundscape, with clever lyrics and infectious melodies reminiscent of the jangly guitar pop of the 90s. But don't worry, American Crowbar fans, “you’ll still find the band’s trademark layered vocals and complex harmonies that you’ve come to love.”
